1. Mission Statement

On March 11, 2011, TEPCO’s Fukushima No.1 Nuclear Power Plant was damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake Disaster and subsequent tsunami, losing all electrical power and lost the ability to cool its nuclear reactor. The natural disaster developed into a nuclear disaster involving massive emission of radioactive material. Residents from the nearby area, mostly from the coastal Hamadori region, have been forced into a life of long term evacuation while all Fukushima prefectural residents struggle from unfounded discrimination, bullying, and economic impacts from reputational damage and the damage done to the tourism industry. These struggles continue to this date.

The Kanagawa Great East Japan Earthquake Volunteer Station (VS) is a collaboration between Kanagawa Prefecture and private entities that continue to give active support to areas neighboring Fukushima, Iwate and Miyagi prefectures, but no support to Fukushima prefecture has materialized to date. With no prospects for restoration of Fukushima prefecture in sight, revitalization remains a pipe dream, far from reality.

Amidst this situation, we, the people of Kanagawa Prefecture, aim to aid and invigorate those that continue to live in Fukushima as well as evacuees from Fukushima. We establish kanagawa.fukushima.ouen.project with a mission to aid and invigorate Fukushima from Kanagawa.

2. Activity

(1) Spreading information (activities in Fukushima, tourism information, hot spring information, local produce, etc.)

(2) Direct action (decontamination volunteers and supporting temporary shelters and children)

Through these actions, we hope to bring back a Fukushima full of smiles and where children can freely enjoy themselves. We hope to grow the circle of support from Kanagawa outwards, and aim to solicit participation from many people in our actions.

3. Background to establishment

(1) October 11, 2011: Started actions in parallel to volunteer activities at VS.

(2) October 29, 2011: A number of spirited volunteers at VS participated in voluntary decontamination actions in Fukushima City.

(3) December 28, 2011: Solicited 36 participants and staff to initiate full-scale establishment of the organization.

(4) January 9, 2012: First meeting. 16 members in attendance.

(5) January 11, 2012: Establishment of organization
